Approx. Running Time: 90 Min
Directed By: Michael Lehmann
Audio/Picture Quality: B-

As the Brazilian rainforest is destroyed, two American missionaries try to teach the native people English using a "Dick and Jane" children's book. But the lesson is interrupted when a huge, irate Cocorada bug arrives and chases everyone from the area. The bug notices the book, and a plan is hatched. A group of these shape-changing insects are sent to a typical suburb of the U.S.A. to masquerade as the typical American family, and draw up plans to blow up the local nuclear power plant. These four bugs call themselves the Applegates, and they do indeed become the typical American family - unfortunately for their mission... You know that well known fact about insects being the only creatures left alive after a nuclear holocaust? Or even a nuclear holocaust? Well, we have all seen from watching old science fiction movies that radiation causes insects to grow to enormous size, but Meet The Applegates is different in that the insects are already pretty big, and intend to turn that radiation on the humans. Written by Redbeard Simmons and the director Michael Lehmann at the time when the threat to the Amazon Rainforest had grown topical, the film is less comfortable being an ecological treatise and happier being a satire on modern American values.

Title: Beaver Trilogy
Year: 2001
Genre(s): Comedy
Country: USA
Language: English
Approx. Running Time: 83 Min
Directed By: Trent Harris
Audio/Picture Quality: B

It begins in 1979 with the chance meeting in a Salt Lake City parking lot where filmmaker Trent Harris is approached by an earnest small-town dreamer from Beaver, Utah. Harris jumps at the chance when the young man invites him to come to the small town of Beaver to film a talent show. At the show, the man dons black leather, blond wig and performs in drag as Olivia Newton John. Harris captures it all on tape. What unfolds is a strange, funny, and ultimately poignant portrait of a true outsider. Not willing to let the story go, Harris then created a dramatic piece, "Beaver Kid 2" based on the documentary. This interpretation, shot in 1981 on a home video camera with a budget of $100, features the young Sean Penn as the Beaver Kid re-enacting the same scenario. Still possessed, Harris then rewrote the script, cast Crispin Glover in the lead, and in 1985 created the final segment, "Orkly Kid" as an American Film Institute project. The three pieces were re-edited, compiled, and finally screened at the Lincoln Center in New York City in July of 2000. Beaver Trilogy unveils the inner world of a fantastic character compelled to hide, yet at the same time, tell the world about his secret life.

This makes things tough for Detective Philip Lovecraft (Fred Ward.) He's a private eye, and the only man left in town who doesn't use magic. It is because of this that the richest man in LA, Amos Hackshaw (David Warner) hires Lovecraft to recover the stolen Necronomicon, a book of immense evil, containing incantations powerful enough to revive the sleeping Outer Gods. To make matters worse, the threadbare detective isn't the only one searching for the book. He's up against a ruthless gangster... who just happens to be Lovecraft's ex-partner. Throw in a witchy landlady, a hot singer, a cross dressing thief, and a jalopy full of gremlins, and Harry's up to his necktie in trouble. He'd better act quickly though, because the full moon is on the rise, the zombies are on the prowl, and someone is about to cast a deadly spell.

If we're going to hold The Stonecutters to their word, it means they decided in 1977 that they would hitch their wagons to a beefaroni-haired Jewish boy from Brooklyn, based on his first role in this nostalgic, coming-of-age, Vietnam protesting, pot smoking heavy (for a PG film), sex-driven, all-singing-all dancing-crap-of-the-drive-in. The film is filled with silly prankish behavior, drug hording nerdy brothers, rich families who will only communicate with their children via intercom, a deteriorating and embarrassed Phil Silvers, and the always bald Ed Lauter, in the well-worn role of "the establishment" (was he the prinicpal, the assistant principal, or just some random adversary that was included by the screenwriters to give the film the on-screen conflict it was lacking? Guess who won't remember as soon as the movie's over?).And if all that fails, there's always a chicken dance, truly the highlight of the movie. New widescreen transfer!

Title: Crimewave

Language: English
Approx. Running Time: 83 Min.
Directed By: Sam Raimi
Audio/Picture Quality: B-

Raim's follow up to his indie horror classic The Evil Dead (1981), is a wacky, mean-spirited and bizarre comedy. It was written by Raimi and his pals the Coen Brothers, and one way to describe this unusual movie is as a live-action cartoon for adults. The film has a fervent cult following but still managed to disappear into obscurity. There is plenty of trademark Coen Bros. dialogue, Sam Raimi crazy camera moves (indeed in this sense this film is more entertaining than his recent sedate mainstream work), and Bruce Campbell charming cheesiness. A pair of whacked-out cartoon-like exterminator/hitmen kill the owner of a burglar-alarm company, and stalk the partner who hired them, his wife, and a nerd framed for the murder, who tells the story in flashback from the electric chair.

Title: Darktown Strutters
Year: 1975
Genre(s): Comedy, Blacksploitation
Country: USA
Language: English
Approx. Running Time: 90 Min.
Directed By: William Witney
Audio/Picture Quality: B

DARKTOWN STRUTTERS is pure soul-crazed 70s entertainment at its maximum! I strongly urge all archivists of blaxploitation cinema to go out and hunt down this one-of-a-kind rarity, a blaxplo-comedy-musical that knows no bounds when it comes to absolute weirdness. Everything from the opening sequence ("Any similarity between this true life adventure to the story Cinderella...IS BULLS--T!") to the rest is genuine cinematic trash, but it's well worth the agony! ALABAMA'S GHOST was just as weird! I'm not too crazy about comedies, but the erraticly innovative formula was far ahead of its time (for 1974). Still, this is a one-way ticket to Funkland Junction! Among the highlights you'll get to see are a police car with a gargantuan siren and a cloning machine, which are hard to believe. The oddball taste does appear to fit well in DARKTOWN STRUTTERS, making this an enjoyable trip through a time when fashion trends and moral values have gone through mass transition.

"Supertrain" pilot movie re-titled for video. The story involves Steve Lawrence playing a guy with a gambling problem who is returning to L.A. on Supertrain and is working for Stella Stevens. Stevens plays a Hollywood agent who is using the trip on Supertrain to try and put together a movie deal with George Hamilton and Vicki Lawrence, who are on board under the credit 'Special Guest Appearances.' Neither George Hamilton or Vicki Lawrence have much of any screen time in the entire movie. In fact, I'm not sure Hamilton and Lawrence deliver more than a handful of line between themselves. The movie centers around Steven Lawrence's apparent troubles with the mob. He's borrowed money and thinks his time to repay has run out and now the mob is trying to kill him. Bumming along with Steve Lawrence is Don Meredith. Meredith plays Vicki Lawrence's husband, he is jealous of her possible relationship with George Hamilton. Steve Lawrence's job is to keep Meredith away from Hamilton and allow Stella Stevens' character the time to put together the movie deal.

Title: Freak Orlando
Year: 1981
Genre(s): Comedy
Country: USA
Language: English
Approx. Running Time: 89 Min.
Directed By:
Ulrike Ottinger
Audio/Picture Quality: B

Surrealists wet dream with Dalmatian midgets! Over the past decade FREAK ORLANDO has amassed notoriety as a "Lost" film.  A still in the British anthology Shock Express identifies it as, simply, "a film you'll never see"-oh YEAH??? FREAK ORLANDO is divided into five more-or-less distinct sections, all featuring "Freak" Orlando, a woman, played by the late Magdalena Montezuma (an Ottinger regular), who appears in various guises (and deformities) throughout. The opening scene is an arresting one, depicting a lone traveler wandering across a barren landscape and entering the Freak City; outside its gates is a woman who literally grows plant-like from the ground.  In part two, Freak Orlando is now a two-headed prophetess whose harmonic kingdom is disrupted by a band of black leather wearing punks who carry around a large, distinctly phallic cone statue and flagellate themselves constantly. They kidnap two of Orlando's friends, resulting in a chase back to the hated shopping mall. Part three begins in the shopping mall, with Freak Orlando seduced by an offer made by department store employees. Catching a glimpse of herself in a mirror, she's suddenly transported to the Spanish Inquisition, where she endures countless tortures, eventually escaping with a band of fellow sufferers.

Title: Full Moon High

Directed By: Larry Cohen
Audio/Picture Quality: B

Set initially in the 1950s, Arkin plays Tony Walker, the star player in Full Moon High's football team, and their best chance of ending the long and apparently bitter history of losing against rivals Simpson High. I swear I wouldn't mention that if it didn't become important later. His father, played by Ed McMahon (who is apparently famous in America for something or other to do with the Reader's Digest sweepstakes), is a paranoid right-wing loon living in perpetual fear of the Red Menace who undertakes a "mission" (which seems to involve an awful lot of whores) behind the Iron Curtain to Romania, taking his son with him. There, Tony's palm is read by a gypsy, who tell him that he has the mark of the pentagram, and has the curse of the wolf upon him ("You will live forever, romaing the earth for eternity - until you get tired of packing.") Sure enough, that very night Tony is bitten by a werewolf accompanied by a gypsy fiddler.

Edgy sketch comedy is woven into one very UN-PC storyline about death and suicide. The nasty edge to the proceedings will appeal to fans of the dark side especially well. The movie attempts a bit of William Castle type nostalgia with "Audience Tests" for certain scenes. How much you wanna bet that the only outcome was the ones we see?

Title: Howard Stern's Butt Bongo Fiesta
Year: 1992
Genre(s): Comedy
Country: USA
Language: English
Audio/Picture Quality: B

Released in 1992, "Butt Bongo Fiesta" came on the heels of the ending of the WWOR television show. Howard was doing all kinds of "butt-bongoing" at the time and the title skit on the video is a send-up of Hispanic dance shows, with your host "Howard Estern." The video also features Jessica Hahn in the 3-D skit "Jungle Man", "Guess Who's the Jew" with Kurt Waldheim, Jr. and KKK-guy Daniel Carver, see Capt. Janks go on a date with John DeBella's wife (which Howard predicted would happen in his battle with DeBella in Philadelphia), the "Gross Video Contest" winners, Boy-Gary dressed as an ape and eating his baby doody, the classic "Tribute to Vagina," and you get to tag along on a real, live, lesbian dial-a-date. Original tapes will come with the official 3-D glasses as well. Many consider this to be Howard's best video of all. Exact sales figures were never released, but the best guess-timates were that "Butt Bongo Fiesta" sold about 300,000 copies with virtually no advertising except for Howard pushing it on the show

Title: Howard Stern's Negligee & Underpants Party
Year: 1988
Genre(s): Comedy
Country: USA
Language: English
Audio/Picture Quality: B

"Negligee and Underpants Party," released in 1988, was Howard's first big pay-per-view event, shown only in the New York City/Connecticut area on February 27, 1988, from which this video was released. The name comes from the fact that everyone in the studio was dressed only in their underwear. Some celebrities who appear include: Richard Belzer, Penn & Teller, Leslie West, Emo Phillips and Judy Tenuta, Steve Rossi, Jessica Hahn (before a lot of her cosmetic surgery), wack-packer Siobhan the transsexual and Becky the Mental Patient. Skits include the "Gay Untouchables", Vinnie Mazzeo cooking eggs on his flaming pants (a definite highlite of the show), the homeless man supermarket spree and Howard wrestling with two lesbians on a bed after they attack him and rip off his clothes.

Title: Howard Stern's New Years Rotten Eve
Year: 1994
Genre(s): Comedy
Country: USA
Language: English
Audio/Picture Quality: B

Four-hundred-thousand household buy's made this the highest grossing, (some say $40,000,000), non-sports, pay-per-view event ever. "New Year's Rotten Eve 1994" is a landmark in television history. Howard's unique take on beauty pageants will be hard to forget. Celebrity judges Joe Frazier, Mark Hamill, Sherman Helmsley, Tiny Tim and John Wayne Bobbitt join Howard in judging some of the worst, and funniest, contestants you can imagine. And some you can't imagine, no matter how hard you try. The contestant's came from all of Howard's market's at the time, each with their own one-of-a-kind act that must be seen to be believed as they vie for the $50,000 first prize. Won by Elaine Marx, wife of Corky, who still haunts the show because of his pending divorce from Elaine. Also features a telethon for John Bobbitt's penis, during which almost $200,000 was raised. Howard offers Bobbitt $15,000 to show his recently surgically-repaired penis on the show, an offer Bobbitt turned down. The best skit is the opening one, with Howard made-up as Michael Jackson and torturing a midget who is playing a small child. Released in 1994, the video also included an excellent, full-size print of the Leroy Neiman painting of Howard that the gang had made for his birthday in January 1994. The original painting can be seen on the current E! Show hanging in the green room of the original WXRK studios.

Title: Howard Stern's U.S. Open Sores
Year: 1989
Genre(s): Comedy
Country: USA
Language: English
Audio/Picture Quality: B

What started out as a fight between Howard and Gary about who was better at tennis evolved into "U.S. Open Sores." The video was recorded at a sold-out Nassau Coliseum in 1989 and released that same year. Howard sold 16,000 seats to sell-out the show in only four hours (better than most rock bands do!). Features Grandpa Al of "The Munsters," Dr. King hypnotizing Penthouse Pet Kimberly Taylor so she orgasms whenever Howard touches his ear (that is, if she's not faking it...watch the tape and decide for yourself), Sam Kinison & Jessica Hahn trying to make up after their feud, Quentin the Stutterer, GinaMan and Crazy Jerry (of "This is Mother Theresa speaking from the bed..." fame), Vinnie Mazzeo sets his hair/hat on fire, and of course, the main event, Howard vs. Gary in a set of tennis. Another highlite is Robin playing tennis against a listener named Darren the Foot-Licker. Darren was in love with Robin and is/was a foot fetishist. When he loses his match to Robin, he (supposedly) lost the right to ever bother her again with his fetish, although he did not live up to his part of the bargain. Sam Kinison finished out the show with a redition of "Wild Thing" with Leslie West and Pig Vomit playing backup for him. The video was the first time listeners got to see the WXRK studios. Not extremely noteworthy today as far as Howard's video's go when compared to some of the others. And who won the tennis match between Howard and Gary? You'll have to watch to tape to find out!

Title: Mondo Trasho (Special Edition)
Year: 1969
Genre(s):Comedy
Country: USA
Language: English
Approx. Running Time: 95 Min.
Directed By: John Waters
Audio/Picture Quality: C

All of John Water's films have their quirks and their staying power and each one is truly a beautiful piece of art but nothing comes close to "Mondo Trasho", John's earlier trash epic. Not only does it have a faster pace than some of his other films but the "story" keeps on coming with more and more drug induced imagery. Divine, John Water's regular performer, delivers an hilarious over the top performance as a gum chewing trashy splendor, driving about looking for men until she is distracted by a nude hitcher and runs over an un-named fashion fanatic played by Mary Vivian Pearce. In the course of the next 24 hours, they go through a variety of different adventures, each one unique. This film boasts some great performances by the likes of Mink Stole, David Lochary, Divine and Mary Vivian Pearce. The film also features a great soundtrack, comprised of hundreds of John Water's favorite tunes. No good tune is left untouched in this trash epic. The film is definitely a more mild one than, say, "Pink Flamingos", meaning that this film doesn't have a lot of gross acts although it does have chickens being killed for real and toe sucking. This John Waters film is definitely one of his most unknown and one of his best.

This is a new Special Edition featuring: John Waters On Real Time With Bill Maher, Rare John Waters Smoking Ad,  John Waters & Divine On David Letterman, Movies That Will Corrupt You, Easter Eggs & More!

Quite possibly the funniest "movies" ever made. This DVD features part 1 (Moron Movies) and part 2 (More Moron Movies)! A collection of over 100 amateurish, bizarre, and occasionally naughty short subjects. Each lasts only a few seconds, and almost all star Len Cella, presumably the 'Moron' of the title. Title: Naked Ape
Year: 1973
Genre(s): Comedy
Country: USA
Language: English
Approx. Running Time: 90 Min.
Directed By: Donald Driver
Audio/Picture Quality: B

It's beyond me why this movie isn't better regarded. Produced by Hugh Hefner's Playboy Productions--which, must as you might object to its trademark "bunny" objectifying of women--it takes the theses of Desmond Morris' pop-anthropology book and translates them into a series of pro-sex, but more importantly pro-tenderness and pro-humanism sketches. Some are cleverly animated (in various styles), others acted out in terms that range from the satiric to the tragic. The non-cartoon segments are primarily acted out by an appealingly goofy, vulnerable if muscled-up (from his juvenile TV stardom days on "The Rifleman) Johnny Crawford, and pert young Victoria Principle. (Stills from her nude scenes here were much later exploited as bogus evidence of a past "softcore" career after she'd achieved fame in the TV series "Dallas.")

I put this set together from multiple sources, some are really high quality (almost DVD quality) from Bravo. Others are from the original FOX broadcasts, some are pretty rough but I would consider all of them watchable. Contains all of Seasons 1 & 2 and 4 episodes from Season 3 (2 of which never aired in the USA). Thurgood Stubbs lives with his wife Muriel in the housing project where he is the chief superintendent. The show, created by Eddie Murphy (who provides Stubbs' voice), follows the adventures of the Stubbs family and the others in the building, animated through a process called 'Foamation.' 4 DVDs

Title: Private Resort
Year: 1985
Genre(s): Comedy
Country: USA
Language: English
Approx. Running Time: 102 Min.
Directed By: George Bowers
Audio/Picture Quality: B+

First of all, let's get something straight. This is in fact the best spring break comedy of the 80's. However, that means it is the best of the 4 or 5 spring break comedies that came out between 1983-1985, really the only two years of the 1980's that had spring break comedies. Therefore, I'm talking about movies like Spring Break, Where the Boys Are, Hot Resort, and Fraternity Vacation, so which also means this is pretty much just a sex comedy. Of all these, Private Resort is by far and away the best one. It follows two young guys, Johnny Depp and Rob Morrow, who are just looking to get laid and in the meantime get in trouble with hotel security, Andrew Dice Clay, and Hector Elizondo before his Chicago Hope days. Also, not to mention the beautiful girls throughout the movie, but what else do you expect? As a result, this is a truly underrated sex comedy
