Title: Baby of Mâcon
Year: 1993
Genre(s): Drama
Country: UK / France / Germany / Belgium / Netherlands
Language: English
Approx. Running Time: 122 Min
Directed By: Peter Greenaway
Audio/Picture Quality: B

Ralph Fiennes and Julia Ormand star in this controversial film set in 1650. It is a masque performed on a stage to an audience, and also to us. A grotesque woman gives birth to a beautiful child, and the event is deemed a miracle. The mystical child is then exploited by his guardian (Ormond) and the church. The guardian seduces a Bishop's son (Fiennes) and the child orders a cow to kill him with its horns. The Bishop (Philip Stone of A Clockwork Orange & The Shining) then suggests a severe punishment. The scene near the end contains an astonishing and memorable lengthy scene of her being raped by over 206 men (although it is hidden from view, but we hear her screams). There is then a scene of the child being dismembered. The cast come on stage and bow to the audience, and the audience turn around and bow to us.

"An agnostic's vision of the Nativity, The Baby of Mâcon is an elaborate desecration of Catholic iconography, and a merciless assault on superstition and religion. Greenaway breaks down the barriers between the play and the outside world, the actors and their audience, so that the performance itself becomes just another corrupt religious ritual. The film is repetitive, cold and misanthropic; everyone here is a fraud, a cynic or a simpleton; even the baby proves malign." - Tom Charity, Time Out

Title: Beyond Love & Evil
Year: 1971
Genre(s): Drama
Country: France
Language: English
Approx. Running Time: 90 Min
Directed By: Jacques Scandelari
Audio/Picture Quality: B

Based on De Sade's PHILOSOPHY IN THE BEDROOM, this filmed version necessarily removes some of the more cruel and perverse elements of the book, but is really about as accurate as any filmed version of one of the Marquis' works could be. Bleakly comic and perversely sexual, the film is about a sadistic aristocrat for whom the pursuit of depraved sexual pleasure is a way of life. The title comes from a common theme of De Sade's work, that the pursuit of the perverse can lead one beyond good and evil.

Year: 1983
Genre(s): Drama
Country: USA
Language: English
Approx. Running Time: 112 Min
Directed By: Bobby Roth
Audio/Picture Quality: B

This truly bizarre movie must have shocked viewers back in 1983, because it contains some truly disturbing scenes, even by today’s standards. The movie is an interesting look at a group of white collar workers who sign up for a retreat that involves mandatory participation in an experimental executive training course. The course is actually the main focus of the retreat, and nobody can escape the compound. The workers are humiliated, abused and tortured—both as a group and individually in front of the group. The goal is to reduce the psychology of each individual to a quivering mound of jelly and then reshape them as they see fit! One of the most disturbing scenes: the naked fat guy in the cage being beaten and force fed like a pig in front of everyone! The freakiest part---this movie is supposedly based on real events!!! Holy shit, man!

Title: Confessions Of a Blue Movie Star AKA Evolution Of Snuff
Year: 1978
Genre(s): Drama
Country: USA
Language: English
Approx. Running Time: 79 Min.
Directed By:  Wes Craven, Andrzej Kostenko, & Karl Martine

Pornographer Robert Furch makes a movie inspired by "Lysistrata," he says. A documentary crew films the casting call, Furch's 14-day shoot, a lighting technician's becoming an actor, and the aftermath of the suicide (before filming ends) of Claudia Fielers, the film's leading lady. Comments by Roman Polanski, Carl Amery, and an unseen narrator connect the possibility of snuff films to the process of a commercial enterprise such as this and Fielers' suicide. Furch pleads innocent, cloaking his work in Protestant virtues. His posturings and his direction are comical; the commentary may be tongue in cheek. What about the appended snuff footage? Is this documentary for real?

Title: Cremaster Cycle
Year: 1995-2002
Genre(s): Drama
Country: USA
Language: English
Directed By: Matthew Barney
Audio/Picture Quality: A

The Cremaster Cycle is a sequence of five films by Matthew Barney (Who is Bjorks husband, right there should signify how fucked up these movies are), entitled Cremaster 1 to Cremaster 5 which create a self-enclosed aesthetic system. The conceptual departure point for the cycle is the male cremaster muscle, and the films are filled with anatomical allusions to reproductive organs and the process of sexual differentiation. A surrealists wet dream, Think David Lynch meets Alejandro Jodorowsky. This collection features all 5 films from high quality DVD sources (with the exception of part 5 which is from a VHS copy, still pretty good quality though).  The collection is 3 DVDs but if you want to start out with just a few of them the layout is like this: Disk 1 contains part 1 & 2, Disk 2 features the full version of part 3 (182 minute version, not the 40 minute US version), and Disk 3 features parts 4 & 5.

Rare Orson Welles film that was later finished by Jess Franco in 1992 Unlike other unfinished Welles films, Don Quixote's incomplete state was not because of lack of finances. Welles always considered his Don Quixote a "private exercise". Or as he put it, he worked on it like an author works on a novel; under no obligations, no time constraints, and could finish it whenever he feels like it.

Title: Dorotheas Rache AKA Dorotheas Revenge
Year: 1974
Genre(s): Drama
Country: Germany
Language: German (No subtitles)
Approx. Running Time: 92 Min.
Directed By: Peter Fleischmann
Audio/Picture Quality: B

DOROTHEAS RACHE begins with the characters talking directly to the camera and thus us, the viewers. But this is only one of the many, many pleasantly weird things you'll discover when watching this film. Right at the beginning we learn that Dorothea, who introduces herself as a 17 year old girl, has just made love to a Martian. And she even has a groovy, smoking meteorite to prove it. The parents are concerned if the pill will work in the case of interstellar sex ... The rest of the film follows Dorothea as she tries to learn more about love (both emotionally and physically) and ends up being abused again and again by an amazing parade of creeps and freaks before Jesus Christ himself pops up to give her some good advice ... Did I mention that this film is weird? The thing that cracked me up the most was Dorothea's father who runs a firm that produces "laughing bags". That's some kind of small mechanism that's in a metal box and is then put into a bag. When you shake the bag you are treated to hysterical laughter ... Awesome, just awesome! If only contemporary German cinema were as fascinating as this 1972 film ...

Year: 1973
Genre(s): Drama
Country: Germany
Language: German W/ English Subtitles
Approx. Running Time: 91 Min.
Directed By: Alexander Kluge
Audio/Picture Quality: B

That rarest of movies: a left wing comedy which doesn't hang itself up in questions of 'realism' but does involve itself very closely with the everyday flux of political and social pressures. Alexandra Kluge (the director's sister) plays a young housewife and mother who works as a part-time abortionist; her cynical complacency gives way to a bright-eyed 'activism' when she's forced out of the job and starts waging a one-woman war against the authorities, the bosses, and the tyranny of the family. Kluge charts her hopeless campaign through documentary (an unblinking look at the fact of abortion) and witty fiction alike, his methods recalling both Brecht and Godard; everything is informed by a kind of wry humor that keeps the plot in perspective without tempering its immediacy. It's hard to think of another film that's as honest, relevant and yet not disillusioned as this.
